SiC Briquettes (Product)

SiC Briquettes (Product)

The Main Product: SiC Briquettes

The silicon content in the cupola furnace has to be controlled not only to satisfy basic analytical targeting needs but also to ensure that the metallurgical requirements are met for stable eutectic graphite crystallization. Since the SiC in the briquette does not melt, but rather is dissolved by the molten iron, a high Si yield is ensured. The solution behaviour of the SiC also creates the conditions for a uniform, high state of nucleation.

The material behaviour of the silicon carbide and the melting behaviour of the briquettes have, together with other factors, resulted in the widespread application of this product. The effect of SiC briquettes in the cupola furnace is that

  1. the SiC is dissolved into the melt only above the equilibrium temperature for SiO2 reduction, thus thermodynamically minimising silicon slag formation,
  2. due to its solution behaviour, the silicon from the SiC does not participate in the reduction of the FeO and MnO and, as a result, the FeO or CaO-based slag systems are not driven,
  3. the silicon yield from the SiC briquettes is directly dependent on
    • the SiC content
    • the reaction behaviour ot the SiC (e.g. its active surface)
    • the reaction time in the liquid melt
    • the reaction temperature of the melt
    • the reaction behaviour of the briquette
